Family-friendly resort hotel in a beachside setting.
Throughout the 1990s James Nicolay worked with the owners and management of Shangri-la's Fijian Hotel on Yanuca Island off Fiji's main island of Viti Levu.
The largest project was the creation of the new Lagoon Pool in a large grove of mature coconut palms on the west side of the rambling, multi-building lowrise hotel. The freeform lagoon pool was designed to fit in among the palms, creating a large swimming pool amenity without detracting from the relaxed, quiet, comfortable feeling which is critical to the allure of Fiji.
In this island environment, water-conserving plants - predominantly indigenous species - were used extensively.
